About the Role

Tameside is one of the 10 local authorities that make up Greater Manchester, nestling between the buzz of Manchester City Centre and the beauty of the Pennines.  We have clear and stable leadership, with an integrated management structure with our local CCG.  Our vision for a new Tameside is captured in our shared plan – Our People, Our Place, Our Plan.  This ground-breaking approach brings our collective endeavours together around a clear, ambitious future for Tameside.

With a manufacturing and industrial heritage, our economy was left behind in the rush to build ‘city economies’ focused on urbanisation and professional services.  But as the cities have filled up, the rule book has been torn up. In a post-Covid economy, there are questions about the focus on city centres. People want air they can breathe and places to play, not long commutes, crowded offices or concrete playgrounds.  We have all the foundations to accelerate our economy in this new landscape.  With our unique offer – well located land and key sites ripe for development, fantastic access to the Pennines, nine market towns with their own communities, unparalleled access to Manchester City Centre and the motorway network, and the political will to deliver change. Our time has come.

Our new Director of Place will be a builder. Taking raw materials scattered around the Borough they’ll build a new economy and a new Tameside.  We have the vision and the strategies; we know what future we want.  Our new Director of Place will make it happen.

Overseeing all services related to place, including planning, highways, parks, culture, arts, environmental services, facilities management and more, our new Director will use all the levers within their Directorate, and influence across the region, to deliver on sites such as Godley Green, Ashton Moss and Ashton Old Baths and town centres such as Stalybridge.  Their professional background is less important than their track record of delivering place-based regeneration, programmes that re-shape places and achieving good economic growth.  They’ll have great experience of public-sector led growth with all this entails – political antennae and experience, great relationships, commercial acumen and deep managerial skills that align and grip services to ensure delivery both strategically and operationally.  Their focus will not just be on grand plans and acres developed, it will also ensure our core operational services work together to support thriving new communities and businesses.  This will inevitably mean driving ongoing service transformation, consolidating the recent restructuring to create a unified service and always having an eye on modernisation and improved performance.

The right person will be excited by all we offer. The backing to deliver, the ambition to change, the ingredients needed to make something special.  Talk to us to find out more, and we’re sure you’ll get a sense of the passion and opportunity that Tameside brings.
