The North East Combined Authority is the new Mayoral Authority, stretching from Durham up to the Scottish Border, encompassing everything in-between. We bring the best from our shared histories with the vision, aspirations and hopes of a new future.
These new roles build on our legacies whilst bringing a new future focus. Together they will forge a new North East economy covering people and place, bringing innovation, prosperity, new skills, greater inclusion and a reshaped geography. This is a rare opportunity – future-focused with a clear vision and dynamism of the new, standing on the stability and foundations of the old. We are building a new executive team, new organisation and new culture needed to deliver this future.
Director of Economic Growth and Innovation
With a key role shaping the North East economy, the Director will bring deep experience and understanding of the sectors that will drive future jobs and prosperity in the region. They will have a highly strategic approach, thinking across the region and seeing future potential; linking industries old, new and evolving to business, communities, people, new technologies and place. They will foster interconnectivity between housing, land, infrastructure and place, and fast growing sectors such as culture, creative industries, digital and tourism. They will understand the need to make this work in a diverse region that is home to cities, towns and a large rural and coastal economy. The Director of Economic Growth and Innovation has 4 direct reports, Head of Strategy and Innovation, Head of Economic Delivery, Head of Inward Investment, Head of Business Growth and support. The directorate as a whole has approximately 40 employees.
The Directors
These Directors will be joining at one of the most exciting times for the region and the country in recent years, with all to play for in a changing national relationship between the regions and Whitehall. These roles are more about how the Directors have and will achieve at scale in their specialist areas, rather than the sectors they might come from.
These Directors will bring deep insight, knowledge and understanding of policy, strategy and delivery within complex systems, with meaningful experience of working across sectors to achieve real impact, and the judgement and leadership to lead across the region and nationally.
They’ll combine a deep strategic understanding of how to change people’s lives for the better with the practical knowledge and skills needed to lead a complex, politically led system with myriad partners and agencies. They will bring bravery, drive, ambition and leadership, rooted in the deep knowledge of how to shape, commission and then ensure delivery with a myriad of partners across complex systems. Their complex array of skills, sensitivities and experience will ensure they can thrive and lead in a highly visible, politically led environment.
Perhaps most of all, the Directors will bring the hunger, energy, focus, passion and pride that will transform our great region.
